Border Cup

28th Feb 2014

The Might of Darling Downs and Central North NSW Rugby to meet at Goondiwindi on 1 March, 2014

This Saturday, 1st March, 2014 will witness the first game of the Gessner Industries Border Cup between the Darling Downs senior and Colts Rugby representative teams and Central North NSW Rugby Union.

This new competition was initiated by Mr Mike Horan, Chair of the Downs Rugby Board. Mike’s intention was to provide a memorable representative experience for both the Darling Downs and Central North NSW teams.

The choice of name of the Border Cup recognises the strong grassroots rugby history of the Border regions. It is hoped that the Border Cup will become an important annual fixture between the country rugby regions of the Darling Downs and Central North NSW. The Border Cup will be a perpetual trophy which is up for grabs each year and next year the game will be held in Central North NSW. The first of the Border Cup clashes will be hosted by the famous Goondiwindi Emus Club on Saturday, 1 March, 2014.  The Darling Downs Colts will also play the Central North NSW Under 20 side.

Downs Rugby is proud to receive the kind support of Gessner Industries who are the naming sponsors for event, hence the Gessner Industries Border Cup. Gessner Industries specialize in the manufacture of broad acre farming equipment and have a strong affinity with the farming community north and south of the Border so makes sense that they are involved with this inaugural event. Also coming on board in the support of this first event is Westpac Agribusiness, a long time supporter of the rural industry.

We look forward to some quality games of good old hard country rugby and a continuation of the local rugby entertainment on offer which was kicked off earlier in the year with the Reds v Chiefs game in Toowoomba.

So get on down to Riddles Oval in Goondiwindi to watch the u20 at 4.30pm and the Seniors at 6.00pm as Darling Downs and Central North NSW go head to head in the first ever Gessner Industries Border Cup on Saturday, 1 March
